Best-of-sector approach

In applying the Qualitative Screens we use Sustainalytics' Best-of-Sector (BoS) methodology, in which each company's record is evaluated in comparison with that of its industry counterparts. BoS is a prudent approach as it enables a more pragmatic evaluation of a company's performance based on a comparison with the best practices and standards within its industry. A BoS evaluation avoids making entire industries ineligible for investment and allows for portfolio diversification. The fact that BoS identifies good ESG performers or conversely, poor performers, sends a message to, and provides an incentive for, companies to improve their ESG performance.
